Our Story
This little wendy house is where it all started in 2014.
Sumitra Nydoo, a resident in the area, wanted to give back to her community, so she opened a small library in the parking lot of the Northcliff Piazza Shopping Centre.
A journalist by profession, Nydoo did extensive research on early childhood development and realized that so many children were not being adequately stimulated.
She began a journey to start addressing this important need.
“reading became my escape, it gave me hope and allowed me to make my dreams a reality. I wanted to share this hope with the children in my community” Sumitra Nydoo
After moving up the road in 2017, we began serving lunch daily. Nutrition is another important part of early childhood development. This is a child’s foundation. It needs to be solid for future growth and development in the mind and body.
Our Children
We have made many friends over the years who have helped us with various materials, from furniture to printing paper to lentils for soup. Every individual contribution is valued and is always put to good use. It takes a village.
During the week, we have short classes for story time, origami, lego, and subject talks.
Every month we call on volunteers to talk to the children about their professions or hobbies. We want our children to be informed, motivated, and inspired. Twice a year we have outdoor weeks, where children are taught outside. During this time, they learn about taking care of their environment and the importance of plants, trees, and animals.
We have a great team that makes it all possible

Over the years the Centre has evolved into a fully-fledged Resource Centre.
The Greymont Reading Centre is now housed in a small office where the children have access to water, electricity and so much more. The Centre runs from Monday to Friday.
The children are provided with stationery and other materials for their assignments and projects.
All the book donations we’ve received in recent years has helped US introduce a new library where children and adults can borrow books.
